Off-Grid Energy Company

Development and production of fuel cells for continuous power supply

HYREF GmbH develops and produces fuel cell systems using bio-/methanol as an energy source. The Fuel Cells are infrastructure-independent without structural measures, they are  flexible in use and can be implemented ad hoc.

With operating times of over 10,000 hours and scalability from 2.5 -50kW, HYREF's methanol fuel cells can be used in many applications with an energy source that is readily available and in almost all areas (e.g. in Class 1 environmental protection areas).

The methanol fuel cell already offers its customers a variety of application possibilities with high degrees of flexibility. Long installation permits, logistic or noise problems as well as high space requirements that are required by other existing self-sufficient energy sources are a thing of the past with the use of a HYREF fuel cell.

Until now, many organizations that rely on an infrastructure-independent and continuous power supply have relied on diesel generators, but these have proven to be high-maintenance and result in significant carbon emissions. In addition, the generators cannot be used in protected areas due to high noise and vibration levels and require a lot of diesel.

This is where HYREF offers smart fuel cell technologies that are off-grid yet environmentally friendly, providing continuous power generation to support customers in remote locations.

The company's solution is independent of infrastructural as well as climatic conditions and is free from noise and vibration for use in any environment, offering sustainable economic benefits and savings.

With a proven lifetime of 20,000 operating hours in a lifetime test with a realistic dynamic load profile, HYREF is now launching its direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) system.

HYREF uses methanol or preferably biomethanol according to customer requirements to produce hydrogen on demand instead of using hydrogen directly, this helps overcome the challenges of storage and logistics.

With HYREF's methanol fuel cell technology, customers can implement mobile or stationary mobile towers or other off-grid applications in an ad-hoc manner without having to wait for lengthy regulatory approval processes, creating high value for their customers. The company's solution is flexible in use and can be deployed anywhere, including forests and nature reserves. In addition, the HYREF fuel cell requires little space and can be easily transported from one location to another.

The company's technology has helped Deutsche Telekom, for example, test a new way to provide continuous environmentally friendly power to cell towers in a sustainable way, reducing setup time from years to months.

Solutions

Stationary fuel cell systems

Stationary fuel cell systems for self-sufficient power supply (incl. additional thermal energy), e.g.:

  • humanitarian camps (e.g. for water treatment, cooling of food or OP's to avoid infections)
  • living and working containers
  • as well as for the supply of smaller, remote settings and villages

Mobile Fuel Cell systems

Mobile fuel cell systems for the independent power supply of:

  • Range extenders for vehicles of all kinds, e.g. autonomous driving agricultural machinery, small delivery vehicles
  • Ad-hoc applications for large events
  • Energy supply for refrigerated containers for temperature-sensitive goods / medicines

Hydrogen SOFC/RSOEC

We are working to build a sustainable renewable energy system that is completely self-sufficient and capable of both storing energy (wind/solar to hydrogen) and converting it back when needed (hydrogen to electricity) - HYREF has completed the first step towards building an RSOEC fuel cell with the successful completion and testing of a 3 kW SOFC hydrogen fuel cell demonstrator.

Use Case

FUEL CELL AS CONTINUOUS POWER SUPPLY

HYREF's off-grid and environmentally friendly fuel cells enable fast and easy deployment of distributed and continuous power solutions, e.g. to cover 4G and 5G infrastructure.

Our Partners

HYREF and STRABAG Property and Facility Services work jointly as partners in the realization of complete solutions for fuel cell systems, offering the full range of services of a technical service provider including maintenance, repair, fault management and monitoring of the installed systems.

HYREF and the Jülich Research Center, Institute Division IEK-14 have been working together for a long time. Now HYREF is bringing to market the direct methanol fuel cell technology developed by IEK-14 and successfully tested with over 25,000 hours. In the future, HYREF and the Research Center Jülich, Institute Division IEK-14 will continue to work together on the implementation of customer-oriented solutions in the field of fuel cells.

HYREF and Fraunhofer IKTS work together as partners in the implementation of customer-oriented solutions for SOFC fuel cell systems. Already jointly realized hydrogen - SOFC systems are to be further developed into promising solutions for absolutely self-sufficient energy supply using reversible SOFC technology.

HYREF and Enersys develop energy storage solutions that are used in the fuel cell systems of HYREF GmbH as buffer and/or peak load storage. This ensures that there are no overloads of the fuel cell systems but also no failures in the applications. The energy storage systems of Enersys, like the fuel cells, withstand the highest environmental loads in these applications and can thus guarantee a permanent uninterrupted energy supply.
